Tonight I went to the theater by myself for the first time. I saw the movie, Where’d You Go Bernadette? tonight. I never thought I’d have the courage to do it. But it was really no big deal. I was next to another lady who was doing the same thing.
It was a great movie with a topic near and dear to my heart. It was about women who lose themselves when they have marriages, careers, and children. This woman was getting ready to let her child go to boarding school. I think when these transitions happen, it throws us for a loop.
Are You a Menace to Society?
In the movie, she was thrown for more than a loop. She runs someone over, knocks her nemesis’ house over, has a huge fight with someone in front of her daughter and then her husband calls in someone to have an intervention with her. Her friend reminds her that she needs to go back to work at her passion. I love the line “if you aren’t an artist that creates, you become a menace to society.” It is so true.
The only thing that actually brings her back to life is working again. It’s kinda true how she has to do something drastic like go to Antarctica to find herself. Luckily, she does and it all works out. It was a pretty close call though.
Why is it that men can follow their dreams and career jump, but women have to think about the family over their dreams or goals. This woman had already been living her dream until something dramatic happened. So it did seem a little easier to go back to her dream job than it would have been to go all the way back to the beginning.
